Welcome back to Day 4 of your 30 Day Body Groove Discovery Challenge!
Today we’re going to talk about the amazing healing power of dance. But first, we need to talk about how you are currently coping with stress and anxiety. They’re an unavoidable fact of life. Certainly, there are lots of things we can and should do to reduce the stress in our lives, but we can never get rid of it completely.
The REAL question is...what are you going to do when the stress and anxiety hits you?
We learn all kinds of coping skills as we go through life, while some are destructive (like drug or alcohol abuse, or my old favourite binge eating), while others are harmless like eating a pint of ice cream, vegging in front of the TV or scrolling social media mindlessly. While these coping methods never actually reduce our stress or anxiety, they at least distract us for a while.
In today’s workshop lesson, we talk about a coping skill that you actually never had to learn, one that is actually good for you...and actually ALLEVIATES stress and anxiety inside and out… I’m talking about dance! Dance is a natural form of movement that helps release stress and anxiety.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE: I want you to identify one coping skill you currently use as a response to stress and anxiety. Ask yourself “is this coping mechanism helping me or hurting me?”. Be honest with yourself and try to identify habits and behaviours that are contributing to your happiness. If your habits aren’t helping, I want you to work on simply replacing these with dancing. If your stress builds up throughout the day, challenge yourself to let that stress go as you Groove with me. I promise that it will help and be something you look forward to. Remember, we can’t avoid running into stressful days. But we can dance our way through them!
